Recently, we received various interesting details about the PlayStation 5 hardware. As it was made clear, among other things, PS5 games cannot be saved on external data storage. If you want to free up space on the internal SSD, you have no choice but to delete your games.

Thanks to the review embargo, we were able to sweeten the start of the weekend with various interesting details about the PS5. As has been confirmed, among other things, there are 667.2 gigabytes of storage space available from the PlayStation 5’s 825 gigabyte SSD storage.

At least on the Xbox Series X it will be possible to temporarily move your games to an external storage device to free up space on the internal SSD storage. If necessary, the respective games can then be pushed back onto the SSD storage of the new Xbox. As was made clear today, this will only be possible to a limited extent on the PlayStation 5.

Accordingly, PS5 games cannot be saved on external data media. If you want to make room on your internal SSD storage, you have no choice but to delete PS5 games and reinstall them at a later point in time if you want to play them again. PS4 games, on the other hand, can easily be installed on an external hard drive.

If the hard drive is connected to your PS5, you can also start the PS4 games from the external data storage. But then you will have to forego technical advantages such as the shorter loading times. We also received confirmation that an expansion of the SSD storage will not be possible for the launch of the PS5, as the update required for this endeavor will only be released at a later date.

The PS5 will be available worldwide from November 19, 2020.
