Nintendo has rolled out firmware update 20.0.0 for the Nintendo Switch, introducing major features ahead of the Switch 2 launch on June 5, 2025, as announced on April 30, 2025.

The update adds Virtual Game Cards, converting digital games, DLC, and select free software into shareable “cards” listed on the HOME Menu. Users can load or eject these between two Switch systems or lend them to Nintendo Account family group members for up to two weeks.

GameShare enables Switch 2 owners to share compatible games via local wireless with nearby Switch systems for multiplayer, though it’s exclusive to Switch 2 initiation.

System Transfer to Switch 2 offers local wireless or server-based data transfer options, with the latter resetting the original Switch to factory settings.

Additional changes include User-Verification Settings for Virtual Game Card access, Online License Settings for internet-based play without loaded cards, updated eShop (red) and News (green) icon colors, and multi-save data transfer. For full patch notes, visit Nintendo’s support website.
