Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the hit turn-based RPG from Sandfall Interactive, has received a big update with Patch 1.2.3, released on May 9, 2025, across all platforms (PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S). This patch nerfs a super-strong skill, fixes bugs, and improves gameplay, making the game more balanced and fun. Here’s a simple look at what’s new.

What’s the Big Change?

The biggest highlight of Patch 1.2.3 is a nerf to Stendhal, a skill used by Maelle. Before, Stendhal could deal over 2 billion damage when paired with her Virtuose Stance, the Medalum weapon, and buffs from allies like Sciel.

This “nuke build” could one-shot even the toughest endgame boss! Sandfall Interactive said Stendhal was too strong, making fights too easy. The patch cuts Stendhal’s damage by about 40%, so it’s still powerful but doesn’t dominate every battle.

They also fixed a bug where Medalum was doubling all damage by mistake, which made the build even crazier.

Other Fixes and Improvements

Patch 1.2.3 isn’t just about the nerf. It includes several updates and fixes too to make the gameplay smoother:

  • World Map Fixes: No more getting stuck in areas, including spots where Esquie (the flying companion) would glitch.
  • Ultrawide Support: The combat UI now works properly on ultrawide monitors, making it look better for PC players.
  • Steam Deck Performance: Improved gameplay for Steam Deck users, with fewer crashes and better controls.
  • Mouse and Keyboard: Controls are now more responsive for PC players using keyboard and mouse.
  • Bug Fixes: Fixed issues like cutscenes stuck in 32:9 aspect ratio, worn triggers stopping shooting while exploring, and other small glitches.
  • Balance Tweaks: Some weapons and skills got minor adjustments to keep combat fair and fun.

Why Did They Nerf Stendhal?

Sandfall explained that Stendhal was weak during testing, so they boosted its damage before launch. However, they “overdid it,” and players found ways to stack buffs and Pictos to hit billions of damage. This made the game less challenging and overshadowed other builds. The nerf brings Stendhal in line with other skills, encouraging players to try new strategies.

What’s Next for Players?

Even with the Stendhal nerf, Maelle is still strong. Players can use her Gommage skill or other builds to deal big damage. Characters like Verso, Lune, or Sciel have powerful combos, too. Sandfall says this is the first of many patches, so expect more fixes and balance changes soon. You can still have fun crafting creative builds with Pictos, Luminas, and weapons.

The Patch 1.2.3 for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 makes the game fairer by nerfing Maelle’s Stendhal skill and fixing bugs like world map glitches and ultrawide issues. The update keeps the game’s awesome combat while encouraging players to explore new builds.

With over 2 million copies sold in just 12 days, Sandfall is working hard to keep players happy. Check out the full patch notes on their official site and keep playing this amazing RPG
