Google is introducing a new way to ensure you’re chatting with the right person in the Google Messages beta app, using simple QR codes for added safety. As first reported by 9to5Google, it replaces the old method of checking a long 80-digit code with an easier process where you and your contact can scan each other’s QR codes.

To use this feature, you need to join the beta program by visiting the Google Messages listing on the Play Store, scrolling down, and tapping “Join” under “Become a beta tester.” After updating the app, open a conversation, tap the contact’s name, scroll to the end-to-end encryption section, and select “Verify encryption.”

This opens a “Security and privacy” area where you can choose to scan your contact’s QR code or show yours for them to scan. This confirms your messages are private and secure.

The feature is rolling out now to Android 9 and higher devices, with plans for a worldwide release sometime in 2025. It will also work with other messaging apps in the future.

People are starting to see this in the beta version, while the regular app version doesn’t have it yet. This change aims to make it simpler to trust your chats are safe.
