Sid Meier’s Civilization VII is set to launch in virtual and mixed reality, bringing an immersive new way to experience the iconic strategy series. Developed by PlaySide Studios in collaboration with Firaxis Games and published by 2K, Civilization VII – VR will be exclusive to Meta Quest 3 and 3S.
The game introduces the Command Table, a board-game-like top-down perspective that allows players to strategize from high above or zoom in to examine the intricate details of their civilizations. In mixed reality, the Command Table adapts to real-world spaces, integrating seamlessly with the player’s environment.
Diplomacy takes on a new dimension, as world leaders from history surround the table in real time, reacting to moves, forging alliances, and declaring war. Players can relive their civilization’s greatest moments through The Archives, a diorama-filled space capturing historic achievements.
Gameplay speeds have been adjusted for VR sessions, allowing an entire Age to be played in a single sitting, though pacing remains customizable. The game supports single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer, with up to four Quest players facing off against AI or human opponents.
Civilization VII also introduces new mechanics, including distinct Ages with unique civilizations, terrain, and resources. Players can mix and match world leaders with different nations, unlocking new strategic possibilities. Core gameplay elements like city expansion and improvements have been streamlined, ensuring a smoother and more engaging experience.
Sid Meier’s Civilization VII – VR is set for release in Spring 2025 and is now available for wishlist on the Meta Horizon Store.
