Ubisoft has released a detailed blog post explaining how “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” runs on the Nintendo Switch 2. The game launches on the console on December 2 and features smart enhancements, including image upscaling and smooth screen refresh, to ensure it looks sharp and plays well on the go.

The Switch 2 version targets a steady 30 frames per second in both handheld and docked modes. This keeps gameplay smooth without drops. In docked mode, it utilises the console’s full power, featuring brighter colours through HDR support. Handheld mode tweaks image quality, view distance, and detail levels to save battery and run well on the smaller screen.

Key upgrades include DLSS, a tool that sharpens pictures from lower detail, making textures clearer and motion smoother with less delay. It also supports VRR, which matches the screen refresh to the game speed for tear-free play – even at 30 frames, thanks to a special fix since most setups need at least 40.

The world keeps its rich look with moving clouds, cloth effects, and good lighting using a baked method that saves memory (like on weaker PCs or Xbox Series S). To hit targets, the team cut NPC numbers in busy spots, shortened view distances slightly, and lowered some texture sizes. Touch screen helps navigate menus, maps, and your hideout in handheld mode. You can carry progress over from other platforms like PS5 or PC.

Bruno, the project’s lead programmer, said: “Bringing Shadows to Switch 2 was one of the toughest but most rewarding challenges… We had to rethink almost everything.” Yannick, the technical graphics director, added: “We’ve worked a lot to make the world run smoothly and remain visually stunning.”

The port skips the Claws of Awaji expansion at launch (coming in 2026) but has all other updates. Future patches will match other versions, with mouse/keyboard support planned for docked play.

Screenshots show detailed villages and landscapes that look great on the small screen.

This is one of Ubisoft’s biggest port efforts yet, proving Switch 2 can handle open-world games well. Pre-orders are live – get ready for ninja and samurai adventures on December 2!
