Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick, in a talk with Bloomberg, confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI has an official marketing partnership with Sony Group Corporation, putting PlayStation front and center in the game’s promotional push.

However, Zelnick clarified that this deal has nothing to do with the game’s release strategy. As expected, GTA 6 will launch first on consoles, specifically PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and Series S, with a PC version arriving later.

“No,” Zelnick said when asked if the marketing deal influenced platform timing. “Historically Rockstar’s gone to console first.”

A Launch With Massive Expectations

Grand Theft Auto VI, developed by Rockstar Games, is shaping up to be one of the biggest entertainment launches ever. The game is currently slated for release on November 19, after facing multiple delays from its original window.

Zelnick didn’t shy away from the pressure:

“Our goal is to deliver something that’s never been experienced before… exciting—and terrifying—because expectations are so high.”

And those expectations aren’t exaggerated. Its predecessor, Grand Theft Auto V, has sold over 225 million copies, making it one of the best-selling games in history, second only to Minecraft.

Bigger Budget, Bigger Risk

With over eight years in development and thousands of developers involved, GTA 6 is widely considered one of the most expensive games ever made. While Take-Two hasn’t revealed the exact budget, industry estimates suggest costs far exceeding typical AAA titles.

Zelnick acknowledged the rising costs of game development:

“Development costs have gone up and up… We aim to deliver the highest quality entertainment on Earth. And that is costly.”

Some analysts predict GTA 6 could sell 25 million copies on day one. For most games, even 10 million would be a huge success—but here, it could be seen as underperforming.

“That’s a high-stakes game for big boys only,” Zelnick added.

Why No PC Launch at Release?

Despite the growing importance of PC gaming—now accounting for up to 50% of sales for major titles—Take-Two is sticking to Rockstar’s traditional rollout strategy.

Zelnick explained:

“Rockstar always starts on console… you’re judged by serving the core consumer first.”

This means PC players will have to wait, but it could also benefit Take-Two long-term. A staggered release allows the company to effectively “double dip,” generating a second wave of sales when the PC version eventually launches.

Early Signs Point to Record-Breaking Success

The hype around GTA 6 is already off the charts. Its first two trailers have racked up nearly 500 million views combined, and many competing publishers are avoiding November release dates altogether to stay out of its path.

Zelnick remains cautiously optimistic:

“We never claim success before it occurs… but we have the most amazing creative teams aiming to deliver perfection.”

The Bottom Line

  • Marketing deal with PlayStation confirmed
  • Console launch first (PS5 & Xbox), PC later
  • Release date set for November 19
  • One of the most expensive and anticipated games ever

Whether the console-first strategy pays off in today’s PC-dominated market remains to be seen—but one thing is clear: GTA 6 isn’t just another game launch. It’s a high-stakes moment for the entire industry.
