Xbox’s Matt Booty Confirms Elder Scrolls VI Is “Coming Along Well”, But Don’t Expect a Reveal Just Yet

Fans waiting on word about The Elder Scrolls VI got a small but meaningful update this week, straight from one of Xbox’s top executives. Matt Booty, Chief Content Officer at Xbox, confirmed he’s seen the game running behind closed doors at Bethesda, and he liked what he saw.

A Long Wait Continues

It’s been a rough stretch for Elder Scrolls fans. The series moved from Morrowind to Oblivion in just four years, and Oblivion to Skyrim took another five. Since Skyrim’s 2011 release, though, the wait for a sequel has stretched on far longer than anyone probably expected back then.

Bethesda first teased the project with a brief logo reveal at E3 2018, offering no gameplay, no story details, nothing beyond confirmation that the game existed. Eight years — and a Microsoft acquisition — later, concrete information is still scarce.

What Booty Actually Said

Speaking with Variety, Booty addressed the radio silence directly, framing it as a deliberate strategic choice rather than a sign of trouble. He explained that part of his job involves weighing the desire to hype up upcoming projects against the need to wait for the ideal moment to unveil them.

In his own words:

“I would say one of the more challenging balancing acts of someone in a job like mine is balancing that you want to go show the world all the cool stuff you’re working on, and you want to get them excited early, but we also know that we want to wait till the right moment. And when you decide to show it, you want it to be the best you’ve got. And also that when you show the game, you’re also giving them a promise of, hey, it’s coming soon. So I can tell you, having visited Bethesda and sat with Todd and seen ‘Elder Scrolls’ playing, it looks amazing, and it’s coming along well. And we’ll make sure to announce it and really reveal it at the right time.”

That confirmation that Booty personally sat down with Todd Howard and watched the game running is likely to be the headline takeaway for most fans — it’s about as close to an official “yes, it’s real and it’s progressing” as the community has gotten in years.

When Might We See More?

Booty stopped short of offering any timeline for a trailer or release date, sticking to vague but optimistic language about the game looking “amazing” and development “coming along well.”

That hasn’t stopped the community from filling in the blanks. Over on Reddit’s r/TESVI, fans have been picking apart Booty’s comments line by line, with some speculating that Bethesda’s 40th anniversary on November 15, 2026, could be a fitting occasion for a bigger reveal. It’s worth stressing this is purely fan speculation at this point — Booty gave no hints pointing toward that date or any other specific window.

The Bigger Picture

With games like GTA 6 also generating massive anticipation, The Elder Scrolls VI remains one of the most-watched projects in gaming, partly because of its pedigree and partly because of just how long fans have had to wait. Every scrap of information, however small, tends to spark fresh waves of discussion and theorizing.

For now, the takeaway is simple: the game exists, it’s playable, and people inside Xbox and Bethesda are happy with where it stands. Whether that translates into news later this year or further down the road remains anyone’s guess — but at least the silence isn’t a bad sign.
