The United States researchers from Maryland said on Wednesday that they have developed a simple way to make wood as strong as steel or even titanium alloys, that could be possible to use for buildings, cars, and airplanes.

Associate Professor Liangbing Hu and Professor Teng Li of the University of Maryland can be seen in the above picture comparing a piece of compressed wood to its original form at the University of Maryland.

Super Wood

According to the associate professor Liangbing Hu of the University of Maryland, the new super wood is12 times stronger and 10 times tougher than natural wood.

Hu also said that this could be a competitor to steel or even titanium alloys, it is so strong and durable. It can also be compared to carbon fiber and it’s less expensive too.
