Sony to Stock 2 Million PSVR 2 Headsets by March 2023, Report

According to Bloomberg, Sony Group Corp. will release 2 million PlayStation VR2 headsets in March next year. The production of the headsets began in September, and so far the company hasn’t experienced supply chain constraints. However, the number could change depending on sales momentum. A launch run of 2 million PSV2 headsets would be almost a third of PSVR’s lifetime sales.

There are a few hurdles to overcome in order to sell 2 million PSVR 2 headsets. For starters, the segment is still relatively undeveloped compared to other gaming categories. For example, one game, Meta’s Quest 2, has only sold 17 million units compared to several hundred million for other gaming products.

The VR sector is also feeling the pinch of the economic slowdown and rising material costs. It’s unclear how long Sony will be able to keep up its rapid production schedule.

The headset is designed for comfort. It has a sleek white aesthetic that matches the PS5 aesthetic. It also has a headband adjustment layer and uses Fresnel lenses, which were not used on the first headset. The headset is also slightly thinner and lighter than its predecessor.

The PSVR 2 is a much better headset than its predecessor. However, the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 processor is not powerful enough to match the performance of the PS5 headset. PSVR 2 to launch sometimes next year in 2023.
