The highly anticipated Horizon MMO reportedly in development by Korean studio NCSoft may have been Canceled, according to a recent report from MTN, a South Korean publication. The report, shared via ResetERA, claims the project was terminated following an internal feasibility review alongside other canceled titles.
Project Cancellation Details
The cancellation of the Horizon MMO, along with other projects such as Project H, appears to have been finalized late last year and into early 2025.
Developers working on these projects were reportedly informed to prepare for internal transfers to other teams or projects. Additionally, these canceled titles have disappeared from NCSoft’s organizational charts, further suggesting their development has been permanently halted.
Since the Horizon MMO was never officially announced, it is unlikely that NCSoft or Sony will make a formal statement regarding its cancellation. However, this development comes at a challenging time for Sony, whose efforts in the live-service gaming space have faced significant hurdles.
Sony’s Struggles with Live-Service Titles
Sony has struggled to establish a foothold in the live-service gaming market, with recent setbacks including:
- The failed launch of Concord in 2024.
- The reported cancellation of a God of War live-service game by Bluepoint Games.
- Bend Studio’s reported cancellation of another live-service project.
While the Horizon MMO’s cancellation adds to this list, the franchise is not entirely abandoning multiplayer ambitions. The Horizon multiplayer game, first revealed through leaked footage in 2023, remains in development.
Sony appears committed to expanding the Horizon franchise beyond its acclaimed single-player roots established in Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West.
What’s Next for Horizon?
Despite this setback, the Horizon series continues to evolve, with Sony exploring opportunities in both multiplayer and live-service models. Fans of the franchise can still look forward to ongoing developments, although the fate of its broader live-service expansion remains uncertain.
As neither NCSoft nor Sony has publicly commented on these reports, further details may emerge in the coming months. For now, it seems the ambitious Horizon MMO has joined the growing list of live-service projects unable to see the light of day.
