The highly anticipated Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy crossover is set to launch on June 13, and today, Wizards of the Coast unveiled the first look at the cards bringing the legendary RPG franchise to MTG. Covering all 16 mainline Final Fantasy games, the set features beloved characters, iconic locations, and powerful creatures—giving fans a chance to relive their favorite moments in a whole new way.

Commander Decks Featuring FF Icons

The set will introduce four Commander decks, each themed around a specific Final Fantasy title:

  • Final Fantasy VI – Terra, Herald of Hope (Revival Trance)
  • Final Fantasy VII – Cloud, Ex-SOLDIER (Limit Break)
  • Final Fantasy X – Tidus, Yuna’s Guardian (Counter Blitz)
  • Final Fantasy XIV – Y’shtola, Night’s Blessed (Scions and Spellcraft)

Powerful Creatures and Fan-Favorite Summons

Among the revealed cards, some stand out as particularly exciting:

  • Jumbo Cactuar – Boasting the deadly 10,000 Needles ability, it can deal 9999 damage in a single attack.
  • Tonberry – A mono-black creature that may take time to strike but instantly eliminates any opponent it faces.
  • Summon: Shiva – Part of the new Saga Creature mechanic, which allows Summons to function as both creatures and saga-style effects before being sacrificed.
  • Sin, Spira’s Punishment – The Final Fantasy X villain appears in three different artwork styles, including a stunning Woodblock treatment.

New Card Types and Transforming Characters

This set introduces Sidequest cards, which start as enchantments and transform into new effects upon completion. For example, Catch a Fish becomes a land once fulfilled.

Additionally, several double-faced character cards have been revealed:

  • Emet-Selch, Unsundered → Hades, Sorcerer of Eld (transforms based on graveyard count).
  • Garland, Knight of Cornelia → Chaos, the Endless (transforms by paying mana).
  • Cecil, Dark Knight → Cecil, Redeemed Paladin (mirroring his transformation in Final Fantasy IV).
  • Sephiroth, Planet’s Heir → Cloud, Planet’s Champion (featured in a Starter Set with ready-to-play decks).

Bonus Cards – Final Fantasy Through the Ages

A 60-card bonus sheet, Final Fantasy Through the Ages, will include MTG reprints featuring official Final Fantasy artwork. The first two revealed were:

  • Yuffie Kisaragi (from Final Fantasy VII).
  • Dragon of Mount Gulg (from Final Fantasy I).

Preorders and Release Date

Magic: The Gathering x Final Fantasy launches on June 13, with prerelease events happening June 6-8. Preorders are available now at local game stores and online retailers.

With legendary creatures, new mechanics, and breathtaking artwork, this crossover is shaping up to be an unforgettable tribute to one of gaming’s most beloved franchises.
