Magic: The Gathering is bringing the world of FINAL FANTASY to life with its upcoming FINAL FANTASY crossover set, releasing on June 13, 2025. Fans of both franchises can now get their first look at some of the cards, which feature legendary characters, breathtaking artwork, and brand-new game mechanics inspired by the FINAL FANTASY universe.

A Celebration of FINAL FANTASY in Magic Form

This set will be the largest collection of FINAL FANTASY artwork ever in a single game, drawing from all mainline entries in the series. Magic artists have reimagined classic moments from the franchise, while some cards will also feature original FINAL FANTASY artwork from legendary artists such as Yoshitaka Amano and Tetsuya Nomura.

There will be over 100 legendary creature cards, 55 of which will receive special borderless character cards to highlight the rich character designs of FINAL FANTASY.

New Game Mechanics: Saga Creatures & Double-Faced Cards

Two new gameplay mechanics inspired by FINAL FANTASY have been revealed:

  • Saga Creatures – Inspired by the Summons of FINAL FANTASY, these creatures enter the battlefield with a lore counter, providing immediate effects but remaining in play only for a few turns. The revealed Shiva card showcases this mechanic in action.
  • Double-Faced Cards – Just like the epic battles in FINAL FANTASY where bosses transform into even stronger forms, these cards allow players to transform characters or events by fulfilling in-game conditions.

More mechanics will be revealed in a special debut event in May.

Special Collector Treatments

Players will have multiple ways to experience FINAL FANTASY through unique card styles:

  • Borderless Character Cards – Featuring beloved characters with art that reflects their original game appearances.
  • Borderless Woodblock Cards – Inspired by traditional Japanese woodblock art, these showcase FINAL FANTASY‘s monsters, summons, and spells in a unique way.
  • FINAL FANTASY Artist Cards – Classic Magic cards reimagined with art from iconic FINAL FANTASY artists.

Jumbo Cactuar MTG FINAL FANTASY: The Gathering’s Most Lethal Creature Yet

A recent reveal on the official Magic: The Gathering YouTube channel has introduced players to Jumbo Cactuar, a new creature card from the upcoming FINAL FANTASY crossover set. While its base stats may not seem impressive, its unique ability makes it one of the deadliest creatures in the game.

A Slow Start with a Devastating Attack

Jumbo Cactuar requires seven mana (two green, five colorless) to summon, entering the battlefield as a 1/7 creature. At first glance, this makes it an excellent defensive unit but an underwhelming attacker. However, it possesses the 10,000 Needles ability, which grants it a staggering 9999 power whenever it attacks.

A Potential Game-Ender

If Jumbo Cactuar is given Trample, it becomes an unstoppable force, dealing 9999 damage in a single hit—enough to wipe out any opponent in standard play. As a result, decks will need to find countermeasures to prevent this from happening, whether through bouncing effects, removal spells, or stun mechanics.

Possible Restrictions Ahead?

Given its ability to end games instantly, Jumbo Cactuar could face restrictions in competitive formats once the FINAL FANTASY set is released. Regardless of its legality, it is bound to be a fan-favorite among players looking to create powerful, FINAL FANTASY-themed decks.

Players will have to prepare their anti-plant weapons when facing a green FINAL FANTASY deck—because when Jumbo Cactuar hits the battlefield, it’s going to be a prickly situation.

Preorders are now available at local game stores, online retailers like Amazon, and other Magic retailers. More details, including a special holiday release later this year, will be shared soon.

With stunning visuals, innovative mechanics, and deep lore connections, Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY promises to be a must-have for fans of both franchises.
